Bharatpur is a city in Rajasthan state of India. Located 50 km west of the city of Agra ( city of Taj Mahal), it is also the administrative headquarters of Bharatpur District. The district has an area of 5,066 km.

Located in Mewat region, Bharatpur was once an impregnable, well-fortified city, and the capital of a kingdom ruled by Jat maharajas. It was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733.

Bharatpur is famous for its Iron Fort which is of its own kind in the whole of India. Like Sariska in Alwar, Bharatpur also has a National Park, one of the world heritage sites, especially for migratory birds. Spoonbills, cormorants, egrets, herons, cranes, storks and kingfishers are some of the majestic birds dwelling in this beautiful natural resort.

Bharatpur is famous for its World Heritage-listed bird sanctuary, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. This is one bird sanctuary that everyone will enjoy visiting. You need not be an ornithologist to understand the beauty of the birds of Bharatpur. In fact, many travelers rate it as a highlight of their visit to India.
